TCM and IVF: How Acupuncture Supports Fertility Treatments

Going through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) can be a life-changing step for couples hoping to start a family. But the process can also feel physically and emotionally overwhelming, with hormonal changes, stress, and uncertainty all part of the experience.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), particularly acupuncture, offers a complementary approach that may enhance fertility treatments and support overall well-being throughout the process.

The Role of TCM in Supporting IVF

TCM focuses on bringing the body back into balance. One of its main treatments is acupuncture, where very fine needles are gently placed at specific points on the body to improve energy flow (or “Qi”) and support natural healing.

When used together with IVF, acupuncture may offer several benefits:

Better Egg Quality and Uterine Lining: Acupuncture may help boost blood flow to the ovaries and uterus. This can support the development of healthier eggs and a thicker, more receptive uterine lining for embryo implantation.

Stress Reduction: IVF can be a stressful process, and stress may affect fertility. Acupuncture encourages the release of endorphins (your body’s natural feel-good chemicals), which may help you relax and feel more balanced.

Hormonal Regulation: If you have conditions like PCOS or endometriosis, acupuncture and other TCM treatments may help stabilise your hormones to support better IVF outcomes.

Reduced Side Effects: Some people experience side effects from IVF medications. Acupuncture may ease these symptoms and support your body’s natural recovery.

Increased Pregnancy Rates: Research suggests that acupuncture used alongside IVF may improve the chances of pregnancy by supporting a healthy uterine environment and better embryo implantation.

When to Start Acupuncture

The timing of your acupuncture sessions can make a difference. Here is a general guide to how acupuncture fits into your fertility treatment plan:

Preconception Phase: Start acupuncture at least 3 months before beginning IVF or intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatments. Weekly sessions can help improve your overall health, balance hormones, and prepare your body for conception.

During Ovarian Stimulation: Have two acupuncture sessions per week during this phase (about 10–12 days) to support egg development and help manage stress.

Around Egg Retrieval: One session after your trigger injection and one before egg retrieval can help improve egg maturity and blood flow to the ovaries.

After Embryo Transfer: A session within 24 hours after your embryo transfer may support implantation. Additional sessions during the two-week wait can also help you feel more at ease.

Post-IVF Support: If you become pregnant, continuing weekly acupuncture sessions during the first trimester may help maintain a healthy pregnancy and ease early pregnancy symptoms.

What to Expect During Acupuncture Sessions

Each acupuncture session lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. When you visit MyTCM & Acupuncture Centre, here is what you can expect:

  • A detailed discussion about your medical history and fertility goals
  • A tongue and pulse check to assess your overall health
  • A customised treatment plan tailored to your IVF cycle

You may feel a slight tingling or warmth at the needle insertion sites, but the process is generally painless and relaxing.
